Citizenship

A nice read from an Irish guy going through his citizenship ceremony in the US reminds me both of my Australian citizenship ceremony back in 2012 and also that once upon a time I had a Green Card, before giving it up and coming to Australia instead.

His interspersion of some citizenship questions is interesting in light of what’s actually going on in the country. The new recruits learning the idealised idea of America while the MAGA Republicans run roughshod over those same ideals!

Part 9 consists of thirty seven questions designed, in the main, to establish whether you are a person of good moral character and also whether you understand, assent to, and are willing to swear to each component of the Oath of Allegiance to the United States. … But others are not trivial at all. I think many Americans would get them wrong if asked. And I feel confident every one of the fifty or so people who took the Oath with me on Friday knew them backwards and forwards.
